Looking for Christmas Activity Ideas?

We’re hoping that this Christmas will be a lot less stressful than last year. If you’re a grandparent, you must be looking forward to spending more time with your grandchildren over the festive season, but what can you do with them that doesn’t involve computer games or watching cartoons? We’ve put together some ideas on fun activities that you can all do at home, giving you the chance to enjoy your time together and create some great memories.

Delicious food is a mainstay of every Christmas, so why not use it as an opportunity to teach the grandkids how to bake. Buy a few Christmas-themed cookie cutters, and you can not only get busy making biscuits and gingerbread men, but also have fun icing them when they’ve cooled down. Homemade biscuits make great presents as they’re not only thoughtful and show that the kids have gone to a lot of trouble for someone special, they also taste delicious!

Make your own snowflakes

We love the idea of snow at Christmas, but the reality is that a real white Christmas is very unlikely to happen. But that doesn’t mean you can’t have lots of snowflakes, each one as individual as the real ones. And all you need are paper and scissors. If you’ve forgotten how to make paper snowflakes, you’ll find plenty of advice online, so you can learn the ropes before your grandkids turn up (and pretend you knew all along!). And when they’ve finished, you can use all the snowflakes as Christmas decorations.

Make sustainable garlands

Ditch the tinsel this year and decorate your tree with something that’s more environmentally friendly – popcorn garlands. The advice is to use plain popcorn and to leave the popcorn out for a couple of days because it’ll become softer and easier to thread onto your string. Then put the popcorn in a bowl on the table, along with a bowl of fresh cranberries or blueberries, or wooden beads that you can reuse next year, and give everyone a darning needle threaded with embroidery thread that’s safely knotted at one end. Then string the popcorn and berries or beads onto the thread in regular patterns or at random until your string is long enough (or the kids get bored), and drape the garland on the Christmas tree or around the house.

Paint your own ornaments

Look online or in craft shops for Christmas tree ornaments that the kids can paint themselves. Etsy is a great place to look for something that’s a bit out of the ordinary, whether it’s filling a bauble or painting pre-cut wooden shapes. The best thing is that they’ll last forever, so even when the grandkids grow up, you’ll still have something that will help you remember their childhood every year.

Traveling the world

Thanks to the virtual world we had to live in during the lockdowns, there are a lot of live online activities that will enable you and the kids to go almost anywhere in the world from the comfort of your living room. Check the schedules on tour websites such as to find guided tours that are appropriately festive – all led by professional tour guides. The tours are free of charge, though if you enjoy the tour you can leave the guide a tip.

Donating to charity

Teach your grandkids that Christmas is all about giving and encourage them to donate some (of your) money to a charity. Give them a budget and let them decide which charity or charities they want to donate it to – it could spark an interesting conversation with them at the same time as teaching them about empathy and giving.

Read them a Christmas story

Reading out loud to children is not only enjoyable, it also has many benefits in terms of their development, behaviour, vocabulary and bonding. Visit your local library or bookshop and ask for recommendations.
